Population is the most frequently requested demographic statistic.

On August 12, 2021, the U.S. Census Bureau released the first local level results from the 2020 Census. Data received indicates that the City of Alexandria’s 2020 population is 159,467, an increase of 19,501 residents over the past decade.

What are demographic statistics?

Demographic statistics summarize characteristics of the population in a given place. For individuals, these data represent residents’ characteristics such as age, sex, race, and ethnicity. At the household-level, demographic data include household composition and homeownership characteristics. Demographic data also contain information on student populations and economic activity. Local decision-makers use information on these topics to better serve their residents equitably

Demographic data are difficult to interpret without a point of comparison. Throughout this website, we provide four points of comparison for every metric:

  1. The United States
  2. Washington, DC, one of our neighbors to the north
  3. Arlington County, another neighbor to the north
  4. Fairfax County, our neighbor to the south and west

The map to the right shows how the sub-national geographies relate to one another.
