The Alexandria City Council is seeking applicants to fill the vacancies on City of Alexandria boards, commissions, and committees.  Council will act on these vacancies at the December 14, 2021 City Council meeting.  All applicants must complete a Personal Data Record form electronically via the City’s website at www.alexandriava.gov/Boards  no later than 5:00 p.m. on December 3, 2021.  Applications received after this deadline will not be forwarded to City Council.  Applicants may only submit an application for one committee at a time.

Please note the meaning for the following terminology related to board vacancies:

 

Expiring Term – denotes a term of a current member will be ending soon.  There may or may not be an incumbent applying for the position.

 

Expired Term - denotes a term has completed and there is not someone in the position.

 

Immediate Vacancy – synonymous with Expiring Term.  A term of a current member will be ending soon. The incumbent may or may not be reapplying for the position.

Ad Hoc Stormwater Utility and Flood Mitigation Advisory Group – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule:  at the call of the Chair and staff.

One vacancy for consideration:

One member with interest or expertise in diversity, race and social equity and inclusivity issues - new position.

 

Alcohol Safety Action Program Policy Board - 3-year term

Meeting Schedule: at the call of the Chair.

Seven vacancies for consideration:

One Virginia Department of Corrections representative, due to an expired term.

One representative of the Alexandria Bar Association, due to an expired term.

One U.S. Probation office representative, due to an expired term.

One citizen member, due to an expired term.

One Public Defender designee, due to an expired term.

One Commonwealth Attorney representative, due to an expired term.

One substance abuse treatment center representative, due to an expired term.

 

Alexandria Gang Prevention Community Task Force – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule:  Task Force meets quarterly.

Six vacancies for consideration:

One middle school representative, due to an expired term.

One T. C. Williams High School representative, due to a resignation.

One Alexandria Elementary School representative, due to an expired term.

One representative from/representing private schools in Alexandria, due to a resignation.

Two at-large members representing youth in the City of Alexandria, due to expired terms.

 

Alexandria Housing Affordability Advisory Committee – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule: first Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. 

Seven vacancies for consideration:

One financial professional, due to an expiring term.

One Commission on Aging representative,  due to an expired term.

One Commission on Persons with Disabilities representative, due to administrative action.

One Real Estate professional, due to administrative action.

One representative of an employer in the city who employs at least 100 employees, due to an expired term.

One Alexandria City Public School employee, due to an expired term.

One Planning and Zoning department representative, due to an expired term. 

 

Alexandria Transportation Commission – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule:  third Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m.

One vacancy for consideration:

One representative of the Planning Commission, due to an expired term.

 

Archaeological Commission – 4-year term

Meeting Schedule:  third Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. 

Two vacancies for consideration:  

One citizen member residing in planning district II, due to an expiring term.

One member from the Alexandria Society for the Preservation of Black Heritage, due to an expired term. 

 

Beauregard Urban Design Advisory Committee – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule:  at the call of the Chair - approximately four hours per month.

One vacancy for consideration: 

One vacancy for a citizen member, due to an expiring term.

 

Beautification Commission  – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule: second Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m.

Four vacancies for consideration: 

Three citizen members, due to an expiring term and expired terms

One master gardener, master naturalist or tree steward, due to a resignation.

 

Children, Youth, and Families Collaborative Commission – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule:  second Wednesday of each month. 

Seven vacancies for consideration: 

One young adult, due to a resignation.

One city employee, due to an expiring term.

Two community members with experiences as parents, guardians, teachers and/or expertise in early childhood, youth, or general education policy, due to an expiring term and a resignation.

Three vacancies for community members with expertise in children, youth and family issues, public safety, medical/health related profession or non-profit experience, due to resignations. 

 

Citizen Corps Council – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule:  fourth Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. 

Two vacancies for consideration: 

One designee from the Alexandria School Board, due to a resignation.

One Commission on Persons with Disabilities representative, due to an expired term.

 

Commission for the Arts – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule:  third Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. 

Three vacancies for consideration: 

One member with expertise in the arts, including, but not limited to, arts educators, professional practitioners of various art disciplines and professional administrators working in the arts, due to expired and expiring terms.

Two professionals in fields relevant to arts and cultural development, including cultural planning, marketing, finance, funding, tourism, promotion, nonprofit organizational development, and real estate development, due to an expired term.

 

Commission for Women – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule:  second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. 

Three vacancies for consideration: 

One youth member, due to a resignation.

Two citizen members, due to resignations.

 

Commission on Aging – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule:  second Thursday of each month at 4:00 p.m. (except July and August)

Three vacancies for consideration: 

Two citizen members, due to expiring terms.

One citizen 60 years or older, due to a resignation.

 

Commission on Employment – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule:  second Tuesday of each month at 8:00 a.m. 

Six vacancies for consideration: 

Five representatives from recognized area businesses including minority-owned and small businesses, due to expired terms.

One representative from such organization as educational agencies, organized labor, rehabilitation agencies community-based organizations, economic development agencies and the area public employment service, due to an expired term.

 

Commission on HIV/AIDS – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule:  third Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. 

Eight vacancies for consideration: 

Four citizen members, due to expired.

One Human Rights Commission representative, due to an expired term.

One representative from Hospice of Northern Virginia, due to an expired term.

One Alexandria Community Services Board representative, due to an expired term.

One member who is a practicing physician, due to a resignation. 

 

Commission on Information Technology – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule:  second Monday of every other month.

Three vacancies for consideration: 

One student from T. C. Williams High School, due to an expired term.

One Budget and Fiscal Affairs Advisory Commission representative, due to a resignation.

One member from and representing the Chamber of Commerce, due to a resignation. 

 

Commission on Persons with Disabilities – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule:  second Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. 

Seven vacancies for consideration: 

Five citizen members, due to expiring and expired terms.

One representative from the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce, due to a resignation.

One representative of the Commission on Aging, due to a resignation.

 

Community Criminal Justice Board – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule:  first Thursday of each month at 4:00 p.m. 

One vacancy for consideration: 

One business representative (designated by the Chamber of Commerce), due to an expiring term.

 

Community Policy and Management Team – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule:  fourth Wednesday of each month at 2:30 p.m. 

One vacancy for consideration: 

One parent representative who is not an employee of any public or private program which received funds from the Children’s Services Act, due to an expired term. 

 

Community Services Board – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule:  first Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. (except July and August)

Three vacancies for consideration: 

Three consumers (current or former direct recipient of public or private mental health, intellectual disability, or substance abuse treatment rehabilitation services) or family members (immediate family member or the principal caregiver who is not paid) of consumer, due expired terms and a resignation. 

 

Economic Opportunities Commission – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule:  third Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. 

Six vacancies for consideration: 

Three Category III - Representative of business industry, labor, religious, welfare or other private groups and interests certified by the Commission, due to expired terms.

Two Category II – Low Income representatives, due to expired terms.

One Category I – Commonwealth Attorney Rep, due to expired term.

 

Emergency Medical Services Council – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule:  meets quarterly at the call of the Chair. 

Seven vacancies for consideration: 

One a nursing home representative in the city, due to administrative action.

One representative of the Federation of Civic Associations, due to an expired term.

One Alexandria Hospital administration representative, due to an expired term.

One representative for the Emergency Nurses Association from Alexandria Hospital, due to an expired term.

One representative of the Alexandria Red Cross, due to a resignation.

One Emergency Room Physician from Alexandria Hospital, due to an expired term.

One representative of the Alexandria Medical Society who has privileges at INOVA Alexandria Hospital, due to an expired term. 

 

Environmental Policy Commission – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule: first and third Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. 

One vacancy for consideration: 

One member from the field of environmental science, due to an expired term.

 

George Washington Birthday Celebration Committee – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule:  third Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. 

Six vacancies for consideration: 

One veteran citizen member, due to an expiring term.

Two citizen members, due to administrative action and an expired term.

One city manager or a designee, due to an expired term.

One member to be nominated by the City of Alexandria Pipe and Drums, due to an expired term.

One member who attends high school in the City of Alexandria, due to an expired term.

 

Historic Alexandria Resources Commission – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule: third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. 

Seven vacancies for consideration: 

One Christ Church representative, due to an expired term.

One ACVA Board representative, due to an expired term.

One Alexandria Society for Preservation of Black Heritage representative, due to an expired term.

One Torpedo Factory Artists Association representative, due to an expiring term.

One business representative (designated by the Chamber of Commerce), due to an expired term.

One representative of Lee-Fendall House, due to an expired term.

One representative of Northern Virginia Fine Arts Association, due to an expired term.

 

Historical Restoration and Preservation Commission – 4-year term

Meeting Schedule:  at the call of the Chair.

One vacancy for consideration: 

One citizen member appointed by City Council, due to an expired term.

 

Human Rights Commission – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule:  third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. 

Two vacancies for consideration: 

One Landlord Tenant Relations Board representative, due to an expired term.

One Commission on Persons with Disabilities representative, due to a resignation.

 

Landlord-Tenant Relations Board – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule - first Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. 

Two vacancies for consideration: 

One tenant representative, due to a resignation.

One minority homeowner representative, due to an expired term.

 

Local Emergency Planning Committee – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule:  at the call of the Chair quarterly. 

Four vacancies for consideration: 

One owner and operator of facilities subject to the federal emergency planning requirements of Super Fund Amendments and Reauthorization Act of 1986 (SARA), due to an expiring term.

One representative of broadcast or print media, due to a resignation.

Two representatives of a community group, due to expired terms.

 

Potomac Yard Design Advisory Committee – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule:  at the call of the Chair. 

Four vacancies for consideration: 

One business community representative, due to an expiring term.

Two members representing the Potomac East area, due to an expiring and expired term.

One National Park Service representative, due to an expired term.

 

Public Health Advisory Commission – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule:  third Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. 

Three vacancies for consideration: 

One representative of INOVA Alexandria Hospital, due to an expiring term.

One Alexandria City School Board Representative; due to a resignation.

One representative of the Community Services Board, nominated by such Board, due to an expired term.

 

Public Records Advisory Commission – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule:  third Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. 

Two vacancies for consideration: 

Two citizen members, due to expired terms.

 

 Real Estate Assessment Review Board – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule:  at the call of the Chair (between June and December – up to three meeting per week) 

One vacancy for consideration:

One citizen member, due to an expiring term.

 

Social Services Advisory Board – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule:  third Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. 

Three vacancies for consideration: 

One parent member, due to an expired term.

Two client members, due to expired terms.

 

Towing Advisory Board – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule:  at the call of the Chair. 

Three vacancies for consideration: 

Two members from Alexandria law enforcement agencies to be nominated by the head of the agency, due to an ordinance amendment.

One member representing licensed towing and recovery operators doing business in the City of Alexandria, due to an ordinance amendment.   

 

Waterfront Commission – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule:  third Tuesday of each month at 7:30 a.m.

Three vacancies for consideration:

One representative of the Parks and Recreation Commission, due to an expiring term.

One Visit Alexandria Board of Governors representative, due to an expiring term.

One Planning District III representative, due to a resignation.

Applicants may only submit an application to one committee at a time.

 

Applicants must comply with City Ordinance No. 2452, which states that no appointee shall reside outside of the City of Alexandria unless a residency wavier is granted by Council, and City Ordinance No. 2641, which states that City employees may not apply for vacancies on boards, commissions, and committees that relate to the responsibilities of the department in which they are employed.
