Kick Off Pride Month at Alexandria Pride Fair

June is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Pride Month. To celebrate the month of awareness, the Alexandria LGBTQ Task Force will host its 2nd Annual LGBTQ Pride Month Fair on Saturday, June 1, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Charles E. Beatley, Jr. Central Library, 5005 Duke St, Alexandria.

The Fair will provide information about LGBTQ-inclusive services in Alexandria, free and confidential HIV testing, LGBTQ Family Storytime, light refreshments and LGBTQ Pride swag.

Since 1970, the month has been celebrated in June to commemorate the Stonewall Riots, which precipitated the first major demonstrations for gay rights in America. On June 28, 1969 police raided the Stonewall Inn in New York City’s Greenwich Village, but bar patrons fought back, a spontaneous incident which is now marked as the beginning of the gay rights movement in the United States.
