Citywide Municipal Fiber Project

Phase: Construction

Project Description: The City is constructing its own fiber backbone infrastructure (broadband network) to support broadband services among the City's public institutions, including schools, libraries, public safety buildings, and other City facilities. In addition to improving connectivity among City facilities and sites, the Municipal Fiber project will create potential partnership opportunities to expand consumer choice and increase available speeds for broadband services available in Alexandria.  With the construction of the new fiber optic network, the City is planning to seek new partners who could lease excess conduit space to provide broadband service to residents and businesses. This would allow all providers to compete fairly and would encourage providers to offer consumer services.

Phase: Construction

Project Description: The City of Alexandria, in coordination with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), is improving access to and safety around the King Street-Old Town Metrorail Station. The King Street-Old Town Metro Access Improvements Project will bring station access points and amenities in alignment with the City's  Vision Zero initiative. The new bus loop, pedestrian access infrastructure, and Kiss & Ride area will enable pedestrians and bicyclist move through enhanced station facilities, while also allowing buses to operate more efficiently. Additionally, the project includes new energy-efficient lighting in and increases the capacity of the storm sewer through the installation of larger, upgraded storm sewer pipes. Stormwater quality will now also be improved through underground stormwater treatment facilities that treat stormwater runoff from a previously untreated site.

Second St. Green Infrastructure Demonstration Project

Phase: Construction

Project Description: The City is constructing a green infrastructure demonstration project along Second Street between North Pitt and North Royal Streets.  In line with the City’s  Eco-City initiatives, ‘Green infrastructure’ is an approach to managing stormwater by infiltrating it into the ground to recharge the groundwater rather than conveying it to the sewer system. The project will reduce the existing paved area and will create green space for trees and a series of bioretention facilities.

Construction Update: The City of Alexandria contracted with Sagres Construction Corporation to construct the Second Street Green Infrastructure Demonstration (GID) Project. The project was proposed to take place on Second Street between North Pitt and North Royal Streets.  Work was scheduled to be completed this summer.  However, due to unexpected utility conflicts identified on Second Street and North Pitt Street, construction activities were suspended until further notice.  The City has been coordinating with utility companies and discussing options for the utility conflict.  We are evaluating project options based on the feasibility of remedying the conflict.  As soon as we have a recommended path forward, we will share that with the community.
