Snow and ice storms produce an average accumulation of 15 inches annually in Alexandria, generally spread over several events in a typical winter. Clearing city streets and sidewalks is a difficult process that takes time, hard work, and good communication between residents, business owners, and the City.

Both leaf vacuuming and leaf bag collection start November 1, 2021. Learn more about the City's annual leaf collection program, including an up-to-date schedule, leaf collection zone map, preparation instructions, list of locations where free leaf bags are available to City residents, and frequently asked questions.

The City of Alexandria has adopted an ordinance to impose a five-cent tax for disposable plastic bags offered at grocery stores, convenience stores, and drug stores. This tax would be charged for every bag provided at checkout. The tax effective date is January 1, 2022.

Flood Action Alexandria is an initiative to address flooding issues that arise in our community. Minimizing flooding is a shared public-private responsibility, and the City is committed to working with its residents and businesses to mitigate the impacts of flooding and build community resiliency.

The City of Alexandria has identified three corridors throughout the community as Bus Rapid Transit Corridors. Scroll down for more information on each of the three corridors and the status of those projects.
